The botanical name for this strikingly beautiful plant is Swainsona Formosa.

The more common name is Sturt's Desert Pea, discovered in 1699 by William Dampier. It loves the arid and sandy outback. I used my reference photos from my time living in the Western Australian Pilbara region where it was common to see this magnificent flash of red sprawling across the baked red earth. I recently found some thriving plants in Central Queensland under propagation which prompted this new artwork.

Grevillea banksii; another magnificent Australian native! Magnificent in the wild; magnificent in the garden; magnificent in a vase.

I do love the blossom of all grevilleas. They are examples of Australias' native beauties and a magnificent addition to any garden.

They are intricate in construction and therefore intricate to paint; but well worth the effort!

What a show these tiny little pom poms of golden yellow blossom are!

The Queensland Silver Wattle has one of my favourite blossoms; tiny little golden yellow pom poms in such abundance. I planted this tree in my garden nine years ago, but unfortunately it was destroyed in cyclone Marcia. Fortunately I had taken plenty of reference photos when it was in full bloom.

I painted this with memories of my Dad, who loved gum trees and also had a great knowledge of them. When I was a child, I remember buying a flowering gum tree in a pot for Dad. He planted it on the family farm and it produced beautiful blossom for many, many years. I still think of that tree whenever I visit my childhood home.

I've always loved gum trees, gum blossom and gum nuts. The character that remains long after the pretty, soft, coloured blossom has wilted and dropped away; is so iconic to Australia.

In Australia, 'Daffodil Day' is one of the most popular fundraising events for the Cancer Council. So every year in late August I always buy a couple of bunches of these beautiful flowers in memory of my Father and Sister.

Their fresh fragrance also reminds me of my childhood when I lived in a cooler climate and I could play in a garden full of beautiful spring bulbs with moist ruffled petals fluttering in the brisk breeze.
